Embark on an unforgettable journey from the bustling city of Istanbul to the serene beaches of Antalya, with a pit stop at the charming town of Kaş. This self-drive road trip through the Turkish Riviera is a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, offering a unique perspective of Turkey that you won’t find anywhere else.
The Journey Begins: Istanbul to Antalya
My adventure began in Istanbul, a city that straddles two continents. After soaking in the city’s rich history and vibrant culture, I hopped on a flight to Antalya. As the plane descended into Antalya, the view from the window was nothing short of breathtaking. The turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea sparkled under the sun, and the city of Antalya, nestled between the sea and the Taurus Mountains, looked inviting. The excitement was palpable as I landed in this beautiful city, the gateway to my road trip on the Turkish Riviera. Upon arrival, I picked up our rental car and hit the road, ready to explore this gem. I used CarJet Rent a Car for my self-drive car. They are reliable, and accommodating, have a wide choice of vehicles, and are pocket-friendly. The pickup location is very close to Antalya airport and they send a person to pick you up at the airport and bring you to the pickup location.
The Hidden Gem: Kaş
The drive to Kaş was a scenic masterpiece – think rugged mountains meeting the turquoise sea. Leaving Antalya we got our first impressions of the D400 coastal drive. The road takes you along the coast and into the mountains, catching glimpses of the sea. Along the way, we came across some of the most beautiful villages and beaches in Cirali, Kemer, Finike, etc. You can stop along the way and take a dip into any of the numerous beaches. With each twist and turn, the anticipation builds, until finally, we arrive in this idyllic seaside town - Kaş, a small fishing town known for its bohemian vibe and stunning beaches. Nestled on the Turquoise Coast, Kaş is a paradise for beach lovers and history buffs alike. We had lunch at Tourist Park Restaurant near Kas before checking in at our Airbnb for the next couple of days. Kaş itself is a delightful town, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Antalya. Colorful houses cascade down the hillsides, and the pace of life is refreshingly slow. I spent my days exploring the charming harbor, browsing the local shops for unique souvenirs (that evil eye necklace is now my prized possession!), and indulging in lazy afternoons by the infinity pool of my stunning Airbnb (hey, a girl has to treat herself!).
Best beaches to visit
My first order of business? Finding the perfect spot to soak up the sun and dip my toes in the azure waters.
Luckily, Kaş is home to some of the most stunning beaches on the Turkish Riviera, from the touristy Kaputas Beach to the lively Kucuk Cakil Beach. Armed with my sunscreen, shades, and beach towels, we spend the day basking in the Mediterranean glow, with nothing but the sound of the waves to lull us into relaxation. Kaputas Beach, with its clear turquoise waters and fine, powdery sand, is a must-visit. The key to enjoying this place is to go as early as possible as it starts getting overcrowded by the day and you might have to park the car at least 1 km away and then walk to the beach. Patara Beach, a vast stretch of golden sand, is a haven for sunbathers and nature lovers alike. One place that I will recommend is Pebble Beach. It's not as crowded as Kaputas Beach and if you reach in the early hours of the morning, you can enjoy some quality time swimming and soaking up the Riviera sun. For a more secluded experience, head to Limanagzi Bay, accessible only by boat. If you’re looking for family-friendly options, Akçagerme Beach is a great choice.
Things to Do in Kaş
But Kaş isn't just about sunbathing – it's also a haven for adventure seekers and history buffs alike. For those craving adrenaline, why not try your hand at scuba diving in the underwater wonderland of the Blue Cave, or embark on a thrilling sea kayak excursion along the rugged coastline? For a taste of adventure, head to Kaputaş Canyon, a hidden gem accessible by boat. Hike through the dramatic gorge, take a dip in the cool, refreshing pools, and marvel at the cascading waterfalls. Feeling peckish after your hike? Local vendors often set up shops near the entrance, selling refreshing drinks and delicious gözleme (stuffed flatbreads). And for history enthusiasts, a visit to the ancient city of Patara, with its well-preserved ruins and sandy beaches, is a must.
Bonus Tip: Kaş is known for its traditional wooden boats, the perfect way to explore the hidden coves and secluded beaches that dot the coastline. Several companies offer day trips and sunset cruises, allowing you to experience the magic of the Turkish Riviera from a different perspective.
Where to Eat in Kaş
Of course, no trip to Kaş would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Kaş's culinary scene may be smaller than Antalya's, but the quality is top-notch. I enjoyed fresh seafood at a cliffside restaurant, the panoramic views adding a touch of magic to every bite. Each meal felt like a celebration, with the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks providing a natural soundtrack. From fresh seafood caught that morning to traditional Turkish mezes bursting with flavor, the local restaurants offer a feast for the senses. As the sun sets over the horizon, we toast to another day of adventure with a glass of raki, the quintessential Turkish spirit. For a taste of local cuisine, head to Maya Steak House or Zaika Ocakbasi. If you’re in the mood for international fare, try Cafe Barcelona.
Where to Stay in Kaş
Kaş offers a variety of accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. If you crave luxury and breathtaking views, consider splurging on a stay at one of the many boutique hotels perched on the cliffs overlooking the sea. Here, you can expect infinity pools, private balconies with panoramic vistas, and impeccable service. Check Mandalina Luxury Suites if you want a piece of luxury. Hotel Kayahan offers stunning views of Kaş Harbor and the Mediterranean Sea. For a more budget-friendly option, consider the Kaş Old Town Hotel. There are some excellent Airbnb's like Maya Suite which I used and loved because of the view it offers.
Antalya: Gateway to Paradise
Antalya- A bustling city where history and modern life collide. Think: Roman ruins nestled beside chic cafes. I wandered through the Kaleici Marina, a feast for the senses with its bobbing yachts, colorful shops, and the aroma of freshly baked simit (Turkish bagels). To appease my inner history buff, I explored Hadrian's Gate, a majestic archway that felt like stepping into a gladiator movie.
Best Beaches to Visit
Antalya's coastline boasts a dazzling array of beaches, each offering a unique experience for sun-worshippers and water enthusiasts. Here's a closer look at some of the crown jewels:
Konyaalti Beach: The Lively All-Rounder
This sprawling public beach is an Antalya mainstay. Imagine a 7-kilometer stretch of soft pebbles lapped by crystal-clear turquoise waters. Konyaalti is perfect for families with its shallow waters and a plethora of amenities. Rent sun loungers and umbrellas for a classic beach day, or take advantage of the water sports options like jet skiing and parasailing. After working up an appetite, grab a bite at one of the many cafes and restaurants lining the beachfront promenade. In the evenings, the area transforms into a vibrant hub, with locals and tourists alike strolling along the picturesque pier.
Mermerli Plajı (Mermerli Beach)
Tucked away right next to the Kaleiçi Harbor behind a cliff face, offering a more secluded feel compared to the larger beaches. But to reach this beach (without going through the tough rocks), you have to go through Mermerli Restaurant and there is an entrance fee and usually some waiting during busy summer months.
Lara Beach: Luxury by the Sea
For those seeking a touch of luxury, Lara Beach beckons. This pristine stretch of golden sand, backed by luxury resorts and sprawling beachfront hotels, offers an indulgent escape.
Kleopatra Beach: A Walk Through History
History buffs and beach lovers can rejoice at Kleopatra Beach. Legend has it that Egypt's famed queen, Cleopatra, herself bathed in these crystal-clear waters. While the historical accuracy remains debatable, the beach's beauty is undeniable.
Things to Do in Antalya
The Turquoise Coast isn't just about beaches. Kaleiçi (town center) felt like I'd tumbled into a time machine. This charming old town was once known as Attaleia, and it's been a hotspot for empires since forever. Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks – you name it, they conquered it. Kaleiçi's crown jewel is Hadrian's Gate, a majestic triple-archway that's like a giant "Welcome!" sign from the Roman emperor himself. Picture this: you stroll through the gate and BAM! You're transported back 2,000 years. Seriously, it's like stepping onto a movie set for a gladiator epic. Don't be surprised if you hear Russell Crowe whispering "Are you not entertained?" in your ear (although that might be just the jet lag).
Where to Eat in Antalya
After a day of beach bliss, my stomach rumbled in protest. Thankfully, Antalya's culinary scene is a treasure trove ready to silence those grumbles! One evening, I savored a mouthwatering Adana kebab (spicy ground meat on skewers) at Sarıhan Restaurant, a cozy local favorite tucked away on a charming side street in Kaleiçi. The fiery flavors were a welcome jolt after a lazy day on the beach, and the friendly staff made me feel right at home. Another night, I feasted on meze (a selection of small plates) at Yelli Restaurant on the waterfront. The twinkling lights of the marina created a magical ambiance as I devoured dolma (stuffed grape leaves), baba ghanoush (roasted eggplant puree), and crispy calamari – each bite an explosion of flavor. For a sweet treat, I couldn't resist indulging in some künefe at Kazım Usta, a legendary spot famous for its take on this flaky pastry filled with cheese and drizzled with syrup – pure heaven! One bite and I understood why people line up for this melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece.
Where to Stay in Antalya
Choosing your Antalya accommodation is like picking your adventure flavor! For history buffs and party people like myself, staying right in the heart of Kaleiçi is a no-brainer. Imagine waking up steps away from Hadrian's Gate and diving into the labyrinthine streets overflowing with shops, restaurants, and lively bars. However, if you crave peace after a day of exploration, fret not! Kaleiçi has hidden gems – charming guesthouses and secluded Airbnbs tucked away on quieter backstreets. This is what I did last summer – all the action of the old town was a short stroll away, but my little haven on the back street ensured I slept soundly, undisturbed by any late-night revelry. So, whether you're a party animal or a tranquility seeker, Kaleiçi has a corner for you – you just gotta find your vibe!
